The town of Gympie has an important and colourful history, from being cited as the "Town that saved Queensland from Bankruptcy" to being the home of Andrew Fisher, Labor's second Prime Minister.
Everybody is invited to visit our Museum where you can find out just how Gympie saved Queensland and discover more of the region's past and present. The Museum houses a vast collection of documentation, artifacts and photographs dating from the discovery of gold in 1867 by James Nash to the recently closed operations of the Gympie Eldorado Goldmine.
Based on over 5 hectares the Museum has over thirty display areas housed in and around fifteen major buildings. The entry is through the café and souvenir shop. We welcome visitors of all ages and interests and offer special concessions and complementary guides for tour groups.
The Museum houses memorabilia from the early gold mining era and has displays showcasing military, rural, transport, communications and steam development in Australia .
Spend a few hours or a full day with family and friends and discover the region's past. The Museum boasts a picturesque lake as its backdrop which also has great picnic grounds and BBQ areas. So, bring your own lunch and relax by the lake or alternatively dine in our café which provides delicious meals and soak-up the ambience!
There are over one hundred years of history to enjoy! Our well-presented, informative displays will entertain adults and children alike. The site of the Museum is that of the former No2 South Great Eastern Mine . Some original relics are still on site and there is a fully operational authentic steam driven winding engine, compound air compressor and generator reconstructed on the original footings.
The Museum will keep you busy discovering many things about Gympie and its history. Displays include:
# Relics of later Mining and Gold recovery including gem displays.
# The 5th Light Horse Regimental Military Museum which houses an Award Winning Collection. It includes Military equipment and memorabilia of the sons and daughters, from the Gympie area, that went to war.
# The Andrew Fisher House, named after Australia's second Labor Prime Minister. Andrew Fisher lived here with his family.
# Original historic buildings including an old Gaol House, school, railway buildings, church and slab hut from the Gympie area.
# Relics of the timber, dairy and primary production industry and a wide range of social history relics.
